Abstract

Purpose

Movies critics believe that the diversity of Iranian cinematic genres has decreased over time. The paper aims to answer the following questions: What is the impact of the continuous cooperation between the key nodes on the audience's taste, uniformity of the cinematic genres and the box office? Is there any relationship between the importance of actors in the actors' network and their popularity?

Design/methodology/approach

In the artistic world, artists' relationships lead to a network that affects individuals' commercial or artistic success and defines the artwork's value. To study the issue that the diversity of Iranian cinematic genres has decreased over time, the authors utilized social network analysis (SNA), in which every actor is considered a node, and its collaboration with others in the same movies is depicted via edges. After preparing the desired dataset, networks were generated, and metrics were calculated. First, the authors compared the structure of the network with the box office. The results illustrated that the network density growth negatively affects box office. Second, network key nodes were identified, their relationships with other actors were inspected using the Apriori algorithm to examine the density cause and the cinematic genre of key nodes, and their followers were investigated. Finally, the relationship between the actors' Instagram follower count and their importance in the network structure was analyzed to answer whether the generated network is acceptable in society.

Findings

The social problem genre has stabilized due to continuous cooperation between the core nodes because network density negatively impacts the box office. As well as, the generated network in the cinema is acceptable by the audience because there is a positive correlation between the importance of actors in the network and their popularity.

Originality/value

The novelty of this paper is investigating the issue raised in the cinema industry and trying to inspect its aspects by utilizing the SNA to deepen the cinematic research and fill the gaps. This study demonstrates a positive correlation between the actors' Instagram follower count and their importance in the network structure, indicating that people follow those central in the actors' network. As well as investigating the network key nodes with a heuristic algorithm using coreness centrality and analyzing their relationships with others through the Apriori algorithm. The authors situated the analysis using a novel and original dataset from the Iranian actors who participated in the Fajr Film Festival from 1998 to 2020.

Abstract

Purpose

Hypertension is the most common chronic disease throughout the world. Self-care is the key criteria in determining the final course of the disease. However, the majority of elderly people do not observe self-care behaviors. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the experiences of elderly people with hypertension in order to understand the barriers of their self-care behaviors.

Design/methodology/approach

This is a qualitative study with a conventional content analysis approach conducted in Tehran, Iran in 2017. Data collection was done among 23 participants – 14 elderly people; 6 cardiologists, geriatric physicians and nurses working in the cardiovascular ward; and 3 caregivers – who were selected by purposeful sampling. Using semi-structured, face-to-face interviews, data collection was continued until data saturation.

Findings

Three main categories, including attitude limitations, inefficient supportive network and desperation, all showed barriers to self-care by the experiences of elderly people with hypertension.

Originality/value

Lack of knowledge of the disease and its treatment process is one of the main barriers to self-care in elderly people with hypertension. Deficient supportive resources along with economic and family problems exacerbate the failure to do self-care behaviors.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to explain, first of all, signal modeling steps using Poincaré, and then considering the occurred events, concept of information applying Poincaré section and information approach, the brain pattern variations in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) cases will be diagnosed. A kind of representation of electroencephalogram (EEG) signal, namely, complementary plot, in which the main characteristic is special attention to asymmetry and symmetry coexist in natural and human processes, is introduced. In this paper, a new model is provided whose variations of patterns are similar to EEG’s when the transformation parameter is changed. A significant difference between ASD and healthy cases was also observed, which could be used to distinguish between various types of systems.

Design/methodology/approach

Complementary plot method is one of the most proper representations for Poincaré section of complex dynamics, because, as it was said about its characteristics, it has a qualitative approach toward signal (Sabelli, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2008, 2005, Sabelli et al., 2011). Considering the special conditions of this representation, here, intersection with a circle y2 + x2 = r2 will be used; the important fact is, on the contrary to previous representations in which circular section had energy concept, here circular section considers phases. For finding trajectory intersection points, after calculating the sin and cosine of each term of EEG, plotting them in XY plane and drawing a chord between successive points of presentation transitions, then its intersections with the assumed circle are determined. But considering the sampling frequency, chords and Poincaré section, in this space, a minimum error – as the threshold – should be assumed in the program.

Findings

Natural and human processes are biotic (life-like) and creative (Sabelli and Galilei), and studying coexisting opposites by calculating the sine and cosine of each term in heartbeat intervals, weather variables and integer biotic series or random walk reveals an astonishingly regular mandala pattern; these patterns are not generated by random, periodic or chaotic series (Sabelli, 2005). This paper shows that in EEG of ASD children, mandala-like patterns of concentric rings are emergent in all situations (baseline – watching animation with voice and without voice) and electrode site (C3 and C4), but not in healthy individuals. The authors take the relation between sine and cosine functions as a mathematical model for complementary opposition, because it involves reciprocity and orthogonality sine and cosine are natural models for information. In fact, trigonometric analyses of empirical data to be described in this paper suggest expanding the concept of co-creative opposition to include uncorrelated opposites and partial opposites, i.e. partial agonists and partial antagonists that are neither linear nor orthogonal. Using Poincaré sections, it is shown that the difference in information and creativity of the data is the distinctive characteristic in ASD and healthy cases. Creation is the generation of novelty, diversity and complexity in complex systems.

Originality/value

This paper is an original paper based on cybernetic approaches for studying the variations of ASD children.

Abstract

Purpose

This research aims to examine the relationship between the physical environment and neuropsychological perception in children with Asperger’s disorder.

Design/methodology/approach

This study through mixed qualitative–quantitative approaches conducted strategies including a survey and case study. Accordingly, multiple methods were applied to collect data including semi-structured expert interviews (20 persons) and questionnaires (N = 400). The sampling strategy of questionnaire participants was random clustering and the target population was children with Asperger from Iran Asperger Support Associations. Besides, the sampling strategy for the participants of semi-structured expert interviews was non-random and purposeful. The collected data from the participant’s questionnaires and interviews were analyzed by Porsline and Excel software and content analysis, respectively.

Findings

Based on the relationship between the physical environment and neuropsychological perception, the results of the research indicate that despite all existing differences between the two spectra of hyper-sensitive and hypo-sensitive behaviors, it is possible to design architectural spaces responding to their common needs and satisfy both spectra.

Originality/value

This research on to healing aspect is quite new and contributes significant information about health issues in building design. This study tries to derive and examine the supportive characteristics of architectural spaces that integrate special physical and effective designs to improve the healing process of children with Asperger’s disorder.
